The first district wide Merit Camp at Ranger
Trails Camp was held just prior to the District PowWow on June
4-7, 2001. 53 boys from accross the state came together for the
4 day camp that offered 17 merit badges. Although rain hampered
most of the classes, many of the boys were successful in earning
7 or 8 merits and made a good start on most of the others.
Camp commander, Kelvin Dykes, along with several other leaders
filled the 4 days with classes designed to help the boys earn
as many merits as possible. Boys began to arrive on Monday morning
and were assigned to a group. Each group stayed together in one
of the cabins, went to classes together and ate together. After
a meal and orintation, the first class started the afternoon's
activities. Much of the schedule had to work around the rain.
Part of the canoe and firecraft classes were conducted inside
(nobody tiped over while inside and no fires were built inside).
Monday
evening's council fire service had to be moved indoors due to
rain. The Merit Camp staff did skits and songs that gave the
boys a lot of laughs using a cowboy theme. FCF President, David
"P.B.Bull" Giddens was the speaker for the inspirational
message. He told a story of a young cowboy who wanted to be the
best with a pistol and eventually fell prey to bad influence
of evil men. P.B. challenged the boys to keep their eyes on Jesus
and to not be swayed by the crowd.
The staff conducted multiple classes throughout the week.
Tuesday classes were conducted on forestry, firecraft, swimming
and advanced swimming.
