LUCEDALE, MS-May 1, 2002
Justinn Smathers of Royal Rangers Outpost 64 was awarded the Gold Medal of Achievement (GMA) to become the 4390 nationwide and the fourth from his outpost to receive this prestigious award. The GMA is the highest award that can be earned in Royal Rangers, comparable to the Boy Scout's Eagle Scout. One out of every five boys involved in rangers ever reach this level of accomplishment. He was presented the medal by state director of Royal Rangers, District Commander, Wesley Harmon. The ceremony was held on April 27, 2002 at Crossroads Free Pentecostal Church, located at 2282 River Road, Lucedale, Mississippi.
The ceremony was conducted by Senior Commander, Glenn Hodges. A group of family, friends and Royal Rangers officials were on hand to witness the celebration and show support for Justinn. The service began with a group of boys posting the colors and leading in the pledges to the United States, the Christian Flag and the Royal Rangers.
Justinn, along with family, were escorted to the platform for the pinning of the medal. District Commander, Wesley Harmon, gave the GMA Charge to Justinn which admonishes him to faithfully uphold the high standard of a Gold Medal recipient. He was also commissioned as a Junior Commander and received his red bar collar insignia.
The ceremony continued with presentations of letters from dignitaries including Governor Ronnie Musgrove, Senator Trent Lott, Mayor of Lucedale, Dayton Whites as well as National, Regional and State Royal Ranger leaders. Justinn received several gifts including a $300 scholarship for college and a special GMA watch.
His Pastor, Rev. Harry Cochran lead in a prayer of dedication followed by a message from Wesley Harmon. A reception was held following the service.

| (L toR) Brian Havard, Justinn Smathers, & Kenley Byrd |
Justinn joins an elite group of 23 young men to earn theGMA here in Mississippi. Three others proceeded him in earning the GMA at his church: Jim Sudduth in 1988, Kenley Byrd in 1993 and Brian Havard in 1998. To qualify for the GMA, the boy must have completed all of the requirements for the Trailblazer program, 17 required merits, 10 merits of their choice, read the entire leaders manual and write a 500 word theme on What Royal Rangers Means to Me. They also have to sit before a GMA Review Board. The requirements will change somewhat when the new program kicks-in in 2003.
There are a number of other rangers in the District who are set to receive their GMA. Several have just a few requirements. The district leadership set a goal of 5 GMA's for 2002. But, there is a potential for 7 or 8.
Applications for the Gold Medal of Achievement can be downloaded
from the National Royal Rangers web site. While there, you can
