Mississippi's Museum of Natural Science, A Great Place to Take Royal Rangers

The displays and dioramas depict wildlife and nature in its natural setting. They give boys the feel of God's wonderful creations.

The remarkable new Mississippi Museum of Natural Science reveals the rich diversity of Mississippi's living heritage and places it on display for the education and entertainment of visitors from across the nation. Mississippians can be proud of their museum located in Jackson, MS at Lefleur's Bluff State Park. It is a state-of-the-art facility with excellent dioramas, life-size displays, living species, aquariums, in-door and outdoor exhibits. All of the contents of the museum have some connection with Mississippi - even the new prehistoric Sloth skeleton that was found here in Mississippi in the Yazoo basin.

The Museum of Natural Science is a great place to take your Royal Rangers for a field trip. The trip would be very beneficial in helping the boys in their Nature Study and Wildlife merits. One of the requirements for the Wildlife Merit is to study a wildlife community. The boys can use the educational information to identify wildlife, fish, birds and reptiles found in our state. There is a whole display of the endangered species that make their home in Mississippi. This would help on the requirements for the Wildlife merit: Describe two problems that affect your state's wildlife and Make a list of wildlife species in your state that are classified as endangered or threatened. It will help educate about habitat and the wide variety of species found in our state. The Museum staff is very helpful and willing to answer questions. It is your off-site classroom. Call the Museum and talk to Education staff about educational opportunities available for your rangers.

The new Museum's expanses of glass and octagonal skylight invite visitors to share their time between the indoor exhibits and the outdoor environment. Life-size habitat displays reveal the rich diversity of Mississippi's living heritage. A 100,000-gallon aquarium system houses over 200 species of native fishes, reptiles, amphibians, and aquatic invertebrates. A 1,700-square foot greenhouse provides a home for alligators, turtles, fish, and a lush native plant garden, and over 2.5 miles of walking trails wind through the 300-acre natural area.

Boys observe a salemander on the nature trail. The 300-acre natural area is home to many birds and wildlife.
The complex also has picnic areas, Frisbee golf course, and a massive playground. It is ideal for a Royal Rangers outing. And, you can stay at the Royal Ranger's Ranger Trails Camp and make a weekend field trip. The Museum is about 30 minutes from the camp located just off I-55 N. at Lakeland Drive. It is just across the road from the Mississippi Ag Museum and the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. If you really want to make a splash, take your outpost to the Rapids on the Reservoir at the Ross Barnett Reservoir.
