Exciting Times at Choctaw Chapter Winter Trace

The Woods Walk was the highlight of the 2002 Winter Trace. Pictured is the winning team. (L to R) Adam Dykes, Wesley Harmon, Dillon Goforth, Glenn Hodges and (kneeling) James Young.

The Frontiersmen’s Camping Fellowship held its Winter Trace recently at Ranger Trails Camp. Twenty-seven FCFers from across the state joined together for the primitive camp. Chapter President, David “P.B. Bull” Giddens, and his staff did a fine job putting on the camp. Friday was dedicated to setting up camp, cooking and fellowship. Campfires filled the air with the smell of camping and set the mood for the camp along with the sounds of sizzling pioneer cooking. That evening everyone donned capotes and frocks as the temperature began to plummet. Later in the evening, the FCFers congregated around a campfire for the council fire service. Kenny “Fuzzy Bear” Richardson, gave the message that challenged us to “run to the battle” and meet our enemies like David ran to meet defeat Goliath.

Two FCFers advanced to Buckskin during Trace. P.B. Bull dubbed Dillon Goforth during the council fire service. His FCF name officially became Gunsmoke. Paul Slay was dubbed during the closing activities. He received the “right hand of fellowship” and forever became Redhawk.

After a frosty start, Saturday morning gave way to a sunny mild day. The activities started with hawk and knife throwing competition. In the hawk throwing game, a playing card was stuck to the target. A balloon made the knife throwing interesting. The competition also included grading outfits and shelters for authenticity. The overall winner was Wesley “Leantree” Harmon.

The bulk of the mountainman competition was spent on the Woods Walk. The young bucks and old timers were divided into 3 teams for a wilderness trek. Each team had a guide that traveled with them to point out the perils and obstacles to test their mountainman skills. Along the trail they had to throw their knife, hawk, shoot rifles, start fires, set up a shelter and much more. The team with the best time was the winner. Glenn “Smoky River” Hodges lead the winning team that also included Wesley “Leantree” Harmon, Adam “Highwater” Dykes, Dillon “Gunsmoke” Goforth, and James Young. Each member of the team received a new No.10 Dutch Oven.

The activities concluded with the passing out of the awards. The competition winners got to choose from various items on the award blanket. After prayer, the FCFers ended their trip back in time and headed for home.
