District Training Coordinator, Kenny Richardson and Section 11 Commander, Mike Heck, teach the Transitional Training Module during the 2003 Commanders' Conference.

The Mississippi District 2003 Commanders' Conference was held on November 2nd & 3rd at Ranger Trails Camp. More than 60 Royal Ranger leaders from across the state joined for this annual conference to prepare for the 2003 year. This year's conference offered several new features as well as some of the traditional features to help inspire, challenge and inform ranger leaders.

Friday evening

the New River Boys
One of the new features was the introduction of a guest vendor for Commander resources. David Brecheen, from Louisiana, brought his Wild Wild West store. His store included a lot of books, FCF products and other merchandise. The store was well received by everyone. David also taught some classes on outpost devotions and prayer.

We were also privileged to have Reverend David Cleaveland as our special guest. David is a missionary to the Philippines and is currently intenerating. He brought the devotion on Friday evening and Saturday morning. He also taught a very informative class on Understanding and Reaching Muslims.

The conference began on Friday evening with a steak dinner and music celebration. Everyone enjoyed choice fellowship, a fine prime rib dinner by Jack Dunn, a variety of music brought by District Production Coordinator, Steve Thompson, and the devotion by Reverend David Cleaveland. Bruce Pepper also sang a special number.

Saturday morning's schedule kicked-off with breakfast and a devotion. Glenn and Cindy Hodges provided some tasty meals for the day including breakfast and lunch. Following breakfast, a general session was held by District Commander, Wesley Harmon, outlining the events scheduled for 2002. Then everyone participated in several workshops designed to help the local outpost commander. "I appreciate the fine instructors we had for the classes on Saturday," said Wesley. "The workshops were very well received by everyone."

Workshops included: Understanding the Muslim Religion and How to Reach Them by Reverend David Cleaveland; Using Games to Teach, by Brian Brolin; Discipline in the Outpost, by Keith Vance, RN; Buckaroo/Straight Arrow Crafts & Games by Nora Harmon and John Lawrence; Outpost Bible Studies & Prayer by David Brecheen; Pinewood Derby by Mickey Howard and Ron Murphy; and Promoting Advancement by Pete Manley. Following the workshops, a joint session was help to cover the forthcoming new Ranger Program, lead by Glenn Hodges and Wesley Harmon.

At the conclusion of the day, several commanders were recognized for outstanding achievement in the outpost and section. Pete Manley earned the Gold Cluster Award for the second year as Sectional Commander for section 7. He also earned the Outpost Commander Award and Leader Service Award for his work at Outpost 12. John Frasier, Area Commander for Section 7, earned the Blue Cluster Award. Kenley Byrd, Commander at Outpost 64, earned the Outpost Commander Award. Congratulations to these leaders for a job well done!
