The Mississippi District Royal Rangers held its Ranger of the Year Testing at Ranger Trails Camp on March 7-8, 2003. Pioneers, Trailblazers and Challengers age boys representing their sections competed in this annual event that test the boys general ranger knowledge, camping skills and leadership ability. Dillon Goforth of outpost 12, First Assembly of God in Meridian was the Challenger age group winner. Michael Kennedy of outpost 2 Faith Assembly of God in Quitman emerged as the Trailblazer age winner while Michael Heck of outpost 139 New Life Church of Long Beach took 1st place in the Pioneer group.
Friday evening the boys were treated to a trip to The Park for fun and recreation. They enjoyed go-cart racing, laser tag, putt-putt golf and video games. It was a great time for leaders and boys alike.
The actual competition began on Saturday morning. Eight boys took part in this year’s competition representing 4 sections. Congratulations to each of these boys. They were all exceptional young men and demonstrated a great attitude and discipline. The boys were tested in a written exam, oral interview, skills test and uniform inspection. The Ranger of the Year program is slated to change completely by the National Royal Rangers Office. This year’s competition was the last year under the old program.
