QUARTERLY REPORT
District PowWow Offered Swimming, Canoing, Paintball, Outdoor Games and Exciting Council Fire Services
June 6-8 was the big event of the year. The District Pow-Wow. The theme this year was "Boone and Crockett". This is the first year of a five year series on "How the West Was Won". After five years the puzzle shaped patches will make up a beautiful back patch for an awards vest or jacket. During these five years the 40th anniversary of Royal Rangers in Mississippi will be held in 2010, and the 50th anniversary of Royal Rangers nationally will be celebrated in 2012.
We had over 325 men and boys attend this year’s Pow-Wow. There were seven pastors with us this year. Some of them camped, some stayed in the dorms and some only came to visit and attend the council fire service. We appreciate their support and willingness to come and be a part of this ministry.
The council fire services were wonderful each night with over 100 boys coming forward to accept Jesus as their personal savior, seek the baptism of the Holy Spirit, or pray for special needs. Our guest speaker Commander John Hicks, National Communications and Administrative Coordinator, did an excellent job during the services to hold the boys attention and prepare them for the alter calls.
The weekend was also full of fun activities such as cub-car races, paintball, BB guns, archery, sling shots, canoeing, BMX racing, swimming, FCF traders row, and a challenging new obstacle course. No one had problems falling asleep each night after a full day of activities. Next years theme will be "Remember the Alamo". Plans are already being made, so don't miss it!
The swimming pool at Ranger Trails Camp has been refurbished! Pool Solutions Inc. has been working on it for the past month getting it ready for us to use for PowWow. The entire pool has been plastered, and a beautiful Royal Rangers emblem tiled in the center. A salt water system has been put on the pool also. This system takes salt that is put into the pool water, runs it through a chlorine generator, and discharges it back into the pool. This system will save us a lot of money on chemicals and it will also allow us to keep our pool clear and available for use year round. The pool will also be equipped with a custom made pool cover to help us keep the leaves out.
If you would like to order a commemorative PowWow t-shirt, please download the form, fill it out and send it to Bruce Pepper before June 27. Order Form
Boys Train for Leadership at Annual Junior Training Academy
April 11-13 was our Junior Training Academy. We had boys from all over the district gather at Ranger Trails Camp for a week-end of advanced training.
An advanced Merit Camp was held for boys who wanted to get ahead with their advanced merits. They were able to earn the following merits: Primitive Snares, Primitive Shelters, Aviation, Rocketry, Fingerprinting, Camp Safety, and Wildlife. All of these merits were challenging and exciting for the boys. We had a total of 28 boys participating in the Merit Camp.
A Junior Training Camp, Advanced Junior Training Camp, and a Junior Training Trail was also offered for the older boys. These camps are designed to help the boys with their leadership skills. The things they learn during these camps will be used for the rest of their lives. It will carried back and used in the local outposts, churches, and workplaces someday. There were 12 boys in the JTC, 4 boys in the AJTC, and 4 boys in the JTT.
These were good numbers, but the one that pleases me most was that we had 23 commanders on staff plus others there to help where ever needed. This made for a great Junior Training Academy. Thanks, guys!
15 Join the Ranks of the FCF at the Frontier Adventure
April 25-27 was our Frontiersman Camping Fellowship Frontier Adventure. There were a total of fifteen Young Bucks and Old Timers inducted into the ranks of F.C.F. They learned lots of cool stuff such as black powder shooting, flint and steel, shelters, outfits, knife and hawk throwing, and trap setting. There were also ten Buckskin members who participated in an all night vigil to advance to the level of Wilderness. Wilderness is the highest advancement in F.C.F. Out of the ten, five were district staff leaders.

25th Annual Gulf Regional Training Seminar
What a time we had this past week-end! The 25th annual Gulf Regional Training Seminar was held in Memphis TN. Friday was the Regional Ranger of the Year Testing. Expedition Ranger Daniel Hough, Adventure Rangers Josh Hough and Matt Carter all did very well and scored excellent in the evaluations. We are very proud of these guys for representing us so well.
Friday afternoon the classes got started. There was an IT Seminar, the Your Legacy Module, and other classes along with some staff meetings. Saturday was packed full of great classes. The DLTC Module, Sr. Commander Module, and the Frontier Adventure Module was taught. There was also a class taught by Jeff Johnson on how to tan a snakeskin. For the ladies there was a class taught by my lovely wife on scrapbooking. I was able to attend a closed session meeting with our new national commander, Doug Marsh. Commander Marsh spent several hours with us sharing his vision for Royal Rangers. I can’t say anything just yet, but there are going to be some exciting updates coming out at National Council in March. Things are going to be a lot better for us and the boys.
I will get out all the information I can as soon as it is revealed. The national website will also be posted things, along with videos soon after council, so keep an I on it.
We had twenty-five people in attendance at the seminar. |
Letter to the Pastors of the District
Last week I sent out a letter to 240 churches across the district. My intentions was for it to hit every pastors desk. I want them to know what’s going on in Royal Rangers. As it is taught in the Ranger Basics, the pastor is the key to a successful outpost. They are also the key to a successful district Royal Rangers ministry. I realize that a lot of the churches I sent the letter to, do not have Royal Rangers, but that doesn’t mean that their church couldn’t support us in some way.
Please help me get the letter in the pastors hand. If they try to pass it off to you, make sure they have a chance to read it first. I also enclosed a “Ready Club” form for Ranger Trails support. Any amount of support to the camp would be greatly appreciated. I enclosed a list of supporters of the camp and a list of the churches that are chartered so far.
Let’s keep our pastors informed about the great things happening in this ministry we have been called into. |

2008 Commanders' Conference: Great Time and Very Informative
I want to thank all of you who came to Ranger Trails Camp this past week-end for the 2007 Commanders' Conference. Your attendance and participation made it a great conference. For those of you who couldn't make it we missed you, and I wanted to give you an update of what occurred.
Friday night was a great time of food and fellowship. Kelvin Dykes and Glen Carter showed out in the kitchen and whipped a wonderful meal consisting of Prime Rib, grilled potatoes and onions, snap beans, corn, toast and all the sweet tea you could drink. After a time of fellowshipping and sharing time we all slept good with some full bellies. Read Full Recap |
A Message from the District Commander
Commanders, I hope this note finds all of you well and highly blessed.
This has been a great year with a lot of exciting things going on around the District. For the guys who were at Pow-Wow you already know, but for the ones who couldn't come it "ROCKED"! Literally rocked! The event started out with a band made up of all Royal Ranger boys from around the state. The played some great contemporary/heavy metal/rock style music for the boys while they ate supper Friday evening. This was just the beginning of a fun and spirit filled week-end. Commander Rick Dostal did an excellent job at bringing the word at each service.
Ranger Kids/Super Splash Fun Day
July brought about another event at Ranger Trails Camp. The Ranger Kids/Super Splash Fun Day was held. We had a fair turnout with about 50 people coming in to enjoy the pool and some fun water games. There was a slip and slide, a space walk, water blaster games, and the strainer head game. After lunch the pool was open for the rest of the day. The weather held a lot of people back because of the chance of rain, but it turned out to be a good day.
District Pinewood Derby
September 22 was the District Pinewood Derby. If you missed this race it was like missing out on a chance to go to Talladega! We had over 70 cars racing this year and each one of them were very competitive. Commander Mickey Howard and his pit crew did a great job running the race. Lots of big trophies, prizes and certificates were given out. Here's a list of the winners.
Charter Time
November is charter time and you should have received your charter application by now. Let's blow our charter records off the chart this year. If you have not received a charter form yet please contact Melroy Slider or myself and we'll get one to you. We will also have forms available at the Commanders' Conference and they will also be in the planning guide. Chartering is important for your outpost and your church so let's do the right thing and get them turned in early. Plan on bringing a check to Commanders' Conference and we'll help you fill out the forms there.

Kenny Richardson Appointed Regional FCF Historian
Kenny Richardson of the Mississippi District has accepted the position of the Gulf Region Royal Rangers Historian. Kenny has been involved with Royal Rangers since he was a boy and has become a fixture for many of the Gulf Region events. Kenny is also serving as the Mississippi District Training Coordinator.
As the Historian, Kenny will be responsible for compiling the historical data concerning our region, such as photos, facts, names, patches and dates. He will also be compiling historical information for the Rivermen Territory FCF. Much of this information will be posted on the Gulf Region website, and displayed in the future at the regional seminar.
Royal Rangers is approaching it’s 50th anniversary, and it is important to begin to develop a system of recording and preserving historical information for the future. If you have any historical information about the Gulf Region, or any piece of Royal Rangers history, please contact Kenny to get that to him.
Thank you Kenny for accepting this important position! |

2007 PowWow Review: It Was a Good One!
The 2007 Mississippi District PowWow is history and man was it a good one! Commander Bruce Pepper and his staff did an excellent job putting together a very exciting lineup of games and activities for this year's camp
Outpost from around the state converged on Ranger Trails Camp June 8-10, 2007, with a great deal of anticipation. There were many new activities and some of the traditional favorites such as swimming and paintball games to keep everybody busy during the 3 day camp. The new things at PowWow this year will be "Goat Roping", "Bull Riding", a BMX Track, and to kick things off, a Friday evening concert from a band made up of current and former Royal Ranger standouts. The meals will be provided for everyone Friday which gave more time for camp setup, swimming and relaxation. FULL STORY |
